Feller Contracting completed a full kitchen expansion and remodel in Richfield, MN that not only fulfilled the homeowner’s immediate needs, but also significantly increased the long-term value and functionality of their home.
The homeowners originally wanted to expand both their master bathroom and kitchen to create more usable space. What began as a discussion around short-term needs quickly evolved into a strategic renovation plan focused on improving layout, livability, and overall property value.
Through thoughtful design and planning, we more than doubled the size of the kitchen, maintained the home’s bedroom count, added an additional bathroom, and increased the finished square footage by over 200 square feet.
To create a larger kitchen footprint, Feller Contracting expanded the kitchen into an adjacent bedroom, effectively doubling the size of the space. To preserve the home’s functionality and resale value, a new bedroom was added in the basement, complete with a code-compliant egress window.
Renovating older homes comes with unique challenges, and this Richfield project was no exception.
To improve the layout for entertaining, the kitchen sink was relocated beneath an existing bedroom window. Because the window height was lower than standard kitchen specifications, replacing it would have significantly impacted the budget. Instead, Feller Contracting identified an innovative solution by selecting a thinner-profile countertop material that maintained a sleek appearance while resolving the height constraint in a cost-effective way.
We also repurposed a small transitional space between the living room and kitchen that had previously been a bedroom closet. This area was transformed into a custom coffee bar with upper cabinetry, turning an underutilized space into a functional and visually appealing design feature.
The completed kitchen and basement renovation now serve as the heart of the home, creating an ideal space for entertaining and everyday living. Strategic planning, creative problem-solving, and thoughtful design turned this house into a true long-term home for the clients.
